So dad was out on the mower one day recently, and while riding along the fence line came upon this poor little thing.
The boss's property is routinely occupied by deer, so they're pretty much all over the place on any given day, but this one really caught dad by surprise, especially since the noise didn't scare him/her off. The poor little thing just lay there as the mower roared past and dad stopped quickly and shut it off. He got his phone out and, unsure what to do, looked up the number for the local animal control. He took a couple of quick pictures, and being fairly certain that the mom couldn't have been too far, started up the mower to move away from the fawn.
This scared the little one, who struggled to get up and, falling over once or twice, wobbled off into the trees, hopefully to the safety of his or her mom. Although it's hard to tell in the picture, dad said the little tyke was only about the size of a small toddler.

What a special encounter indeed! Hoping the toddler deer found its Mom.

One thing about fawns, when they are fresh born which that one sounds like since it was so wobbly, their mom tells them to lay perfectly still and do not move. And that's exactly what they do no matter the circumstances. I'm sure that the mom got to it quite fine and the second one is around there somewhere too. But it is exciting to find the first babies of the year.
if mackerull were commenting he wood say… deer iz vizshuz

Where I used to live, this was often a common sight in the wooded area near the edges of the property. Per local naturists, Mom often tucked the wee one in while she went off for food, or even rest, and as said above the wee one knew to "stay put", they'd be safe until her return, and generally were if left to be. Still wide-eyed and trembling, it was a learning time, yet a hard lesson. All that aside, adorable, mmm!
So sweet. We hope he/she got back to Mom safely.
It's a really hard time of year for fawns in tall grass and, even worse, in plantations. Everyone needs to be really careful. So glad your Dad was, Smudge!

What a pretty little thing!
Bet it was a surprise for your dad, Smudge.
That is a sweet little fawn. We get quite a few here, and when they are new born the mother leaves them so she can eat. Nothing will make them move until the mother comes back, so hopefully she soon returned for him.
Smudge...OMCs what a beautiful photo of the dear little deer. I know it must have been very hard for the animal lover in Dad to leave it alone...as it would be me. However, I keep reading that we should. I hope and purr precious one...heard her mom calling her...
I just happened to check my blog span folder...saw Dad's comment there.
Hugs to you Boss lady and staff

Such a beautiful little creature. I hope she was OK.
Poor little guy ! We hope he finds his mom ! Purrs
Pretty wee fawn. Hopefully the mother wasn't far away.
What a precious little fawn your dad saw, Smudge. We do hope its mama found it and everything is okay. XO
I learned just a few months ago that fawn's will stay put until their mother returns, so with fingers crossed I imagine all is well. Thanks for the adorable photo. Best wishes!
Lulu: "Bambi! So sweet! I hope Mom was waiting out in the woods!"
Sweet. I'm sure Mom found her not long after. They often leave them for the day.
What an adorable baby! We hope the deer mamma came and found her baby soon.!
Lynn is exactly right. I heard that the Mama deer puts them someplace and they know to stay until the mama returns for them. The Mama ALWAYS returns!
Oh, it is something that always makes me anxious for the baby when I see them so vulnerable like that. I hope the fawn made it safely.
Wow!!! He/She was so lucky it didn't get run over by the mower blades. A close call indeed.
